Fragrance

Lisa Cox

Secrets locked in
Neurons
Infinite combinations
Mixed with emotional
Overtones tangled
In family secrets
Deep in lobes
Crosswired between
Senses
Fractured by fear
And protective amnesia
Here comes the knife
Subtle, sweet, sour, deep
Robust, moldy – so unique
A key this fragrance
Goes straight in the lock
Of my brain
Flooding images come
Pouring out
Unstoppable
Babbling words
Like a beaver dam
Blown sky high
Releasing a backlog
Of emotional
Dammed pond water
How can a smell
Unbury the dead
Make me cower
Under the bed
Make me blush
And then in a rush
Yank my heart out
I breathe slowly
Trying to measure
The quantity of scent
Trying to control
My uncontrollable
Brain
This scent, this drug
Is my undoing
